Best Part-time Jobs for Teenagers

How to Choose the Right Part-time Job for a Teenager

There is a pretty rich choice of part-time jobs for teenagers. In order to choose the right one, what you should do is to analyze your preferences (what kind of work you like/dislike) and expectations (what you expect to benefit from it: professional experience, cultural development, pastime or earning some cash). To make the task of choosing easier for you, here is a list of some part-time jobs with the description of their negative and positive aspect.

  • Animal caretaker (pet sitter, dog walker, groomer)
Disadvantages: The job implies absolute absence of verbal communication, which can make you feel lonely (unless your client is a kind of fairytale talking animal). It also implies the necessity to deal with unlikable things pets do.
Advantages: If you like animals, this job will feel more like a pastime and not work: you will be able to manage your work hours, earn some money, and realize that pets can listen, understand and sympathize with any troubles of yours like no one else can.
  • Landscaper (lawn mowing, raking, shoveling)
Disadvantages: As any manual job, it can be physically exhausting.
Advantages: If you enjoy physical activities, this job will be an excellent exercise that also pays pretty well.
  • Tutor
Disadvantages: Being locked in a building all day, with minimum physical activity may become frustrating.
Advantages: The job pays very well, is a good practice and opportunity to excel even more at your favorite subjects, and gives an overall feeling of accomplishment.
  • Restaurant Employee
Disadvantages: A pretty stressful job, with a lot of fussy customers that abuse pretty often.
Advantages: A great testing field to practice social skills, meet people, and acquire some knowledge and expertise in handling difficult client situations.
  • Office intern
Disadvantages: Low or no payment, at first you will have to do a lot of grunt work.
Advantages: An excellent resume builder with potential of leading to a long-term, more interesting and higher-paying position.
  • Volunteer
    Disadvantages: Doesn’t pay at all.
Advantages: An opportunity to do what you like and what you believe is right. This experience will be an asset, when added to your resume and/or college application.
