• Since many tuition programs include a provision for a certain number of meals, the cost of which the program covers try to eat as much as possible in the university’s dining halls and cafeteria. Even though the food there is not always exactly what you like, but this is the best option of daily sustenance that will not break your bank. There are also campus restaurants that probably are not included in your tuition plan and may bring some unexpected charges into your tuition bill, if your college uses a card swipe system.
• Since it’s cheaper to cook yourself, get a pot and an electric hot plate for your dorm room. With these two items you can easily prepare a lot of cheap eats options. And if you get a refrigerator in your dorm room, you’ll be able to cook even a richer variety of cheap and delicious meals, like homemade soup, macaroni and cheese, oatmeal and a lot more.
• Have a potluck meal once a week with your friends. With everyone bringing an item a week, you’ll spend money on only one thing and will have a good meal. Keep a list of items for everyone to sign up for the item they wish to bring, and take turns for the more expensive items so that everyone have equal chance of eating well on the cheap.
• Since parents love to send care packages to their kids in college, take advantage of this fact and ask for items that travel well and which you can cook, such as instant oatmeal, instant soup, dried fruit and snack bars. Such a care package will help to get through the week without spending money on food.
